Bomb threat prompts evacuation at Surf City Pier; Scene cleared after investigation

SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — A bomb threat reported Wednesday evening at the Surf City Pier prompted a large-scale emergency response and the evacuation of patrons before officials later determined the area was safe.
At approximately 8 p.m. on June 17, authorities were called to the pier at 112 S. Shore Drive after the threat was reported. Visitors were immediately evacuated and moved to a safe location as crews secured the area.
The Surf City Police Department, Surf City Fire Department, Surf City Emergency Management, and additional agencies responded to the scene. The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation Bomb Squad were also requested to assist with the investigation.
Officials said responders conducted a thorough assessment of the pier and surrounding area. By approximately 10:30 p.m., authorities determined the location was free of any threats.
Town officials thanked residents and visitors for their cooperation and patience during the response, noting that all threats are taken seriously and addressed immediately to ensure public safety.
While the scene has been cleared, officials said the investigation remains ongoing and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
