ASHEBORO, NC (WWAY) — The North Carolina Zoo and Botanical Gardens has reached a major milestone, surpassing one million hours of volunteer service since its volunteer program began in the late 1970s.

According to the zoo, the achievement reflects decades of contributions from thousands of volunteers, including individuals, families, interns, corporate partners and community groups. Volunteers support a wide range of operations, from greeting guests and leading educational programs to assisting animal care teams and helping with special events.

Interim Zoo Director Diane Villa said volunteers play an important role in supporting the zoo’s mission of wildlife conservation, education and animal care while helping create positive experiences for visitors.

Director of Volunteer and Intern Services Toy Lambeth said volunteers serve as ambassadors for the zoo, and help strengthen its ability to care for animals, engage visitors and promote conservation efforts.

Zoo officials said the milestone also highlights long-standing partnerships with schools, businesses and civic organizations across North Carolina. Those partnerships have helped connect people of different ages and backgrounds through a shared commitment to protecting wildlife and natural habitats.

As it celebrates the accomplishment, the North Carolina Zoo is encouraging new volunteers to become involved and support its ongoing mission.
