USACE releases final environmental review for proposed Wilmington harbor deepening

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Wilmington District has released its Final Letter Report and Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) for the proposed Wilmington Harbor Navigation Project, marking a major milestone in the effort to deepen and widen the harbor’s navigation channels.
The documents, developed in partnership with the North Carolina State Ports Authority, evaluate proposed transportation improvements at Wilmington Harbor and were prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
Publication of the final documents in the Federal Register begins a required 30-day waiting period, allowing federal agencies, Tribal governments, stakeholders, and the public time to review the findings before they are submitted to the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works for a final Record of Decision. No additional public comment period is associated with the release of the final documents.
According to the USACE, the environmental review reflects years of collaboration with government agencies, stakeholders, and community members.
The proposed project would deepen and widen navigation channels at Wilmington Harbor, a move intended to improve the port’s ability to accommodate larger commercial vessels and support future maritime transportation needs.
The final Letter Report, Environmental Impact Statement, and supporting documents are available on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Wilmington District website.
USACE officials said they remain committed to working with partners to advance critical infrastructure projects while streamlining the delivery process.
