State commission to consider financing for new Calabash Town Hall, other local requests

CALABASH, NC (WWAY) — The Town of Calabash is seeking state approval to borrow $2 million to help fund a new Town Hall.
The financing request will be considered Tuesday by the North Carolina Local Government Commission during its July meeting.
Town leaders say the current Town Hall no longer provides enough space to meet the needs of employees or the growing community. According to the town, the new facility is needed to improve daily operations and better serve residents.
The proposed project carries a total price tag of $3.1 million. In addition to the $2 million financing request, the town plans to contribute $1.1 million in cash toward construction.
The Local Government Commission reviews most borrowing requests from local governments across North Carolina. The commission determines whether proposed debt is reasonable and whether local governments can afford to repay it.
The commission will also consider several other requests affecting southeastern North Carolina during Tuesday’s meeting.
Brunswick County is asking for approval to issue $40 million in limited obligation bonds to build a new Health and Human Services and Emergency Operations Center and to refinance debt associated with North Brunswick High School.
Meanwhile, Cape Fear Public Utility Authority is seeking approval to issue $230 million in revenue bonds to replace its Southside Water Reclamation Facility. The project would include new infrastructure, updated treatment technology and expanded treatment capacity.
