SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — The Southport Police Department is asking for the public’s help as investigators work to identify those responsible for widespread vandalism that damaged hundreds of items placed along the city’s Fourth of July parade route.

According to the department, officers were first notified around 7:30 a.m. on Friday, July 3, after City of Southport Public Works employees discovered several chairs along North Howe Street that had been intentionally cut or damaged.

When officers arrived, they found the damage extended well beyond the initial report. As they surveyed the parade route, investigators discovered numerous chairs, tents and other personal property that had been slashed, cut or otherwise intentionally vandalized after being placed along Howe Street in preparation for the annual Fourth of July Parade.

Throughout the day, additional residents reported that their belongings had also been damaged.

Police say investigators have documented approximately 240 damaged items, and the investigation remains active.

The Southport Police Department is encouraging anyone whose property was vandalized to contact Detective Riley Ransom so the damage can be included in the ongoing investigation.

Residents should provide:

  • Their full name, address and contact information.
  • The location where the property was placed along Howe Street.
  • A detailed description of the damaged property.
  • An estimated value of the damaged items.

Reports can be submitted by email.

Investigators are also seeking photos, videos or other evidence that may help identify the person or persons responsible. Anyone who witnessed suspicious activity before the parade or has information related to the vandalism is urged to contact Detective Riley Ransom. Police say even small details could prove valuable to the investigation.

“The Southport Police Department appreciates the cooperation and support of our residents and visitors as we work to identify those responsible for this senseless act of vandalism,” the department said in a statement. “We remain committed to thoroughly investigating this case and holding those responsible accountable.”

No suspects have been identified, and no arrests have been announced.
