Pender County schools summer meals program surpasses 100,000 meals served

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Pender County Schools has reached a major milestone in its Summer Meals Program, serving more than 100,000 meals to children and families across the county this summer.
Following Wednesday’s meal distribution, the district announced it has now provided 107,412 meals, including 17,374 meals served on Wednesday alone. The achievement highlights the continued demand for the program, which helps ensure children have access to nutritious meals while school is out for the summer.
To put the milestone into perspective, 107,412 meals would be enough to feed a sold-out crowd at the Dean Smith Center, Cameron Indoor Stadium, and NC State’s Lenovo Center—twice—with nearly 5,900 meals still remaining.
“This milestone reflects the dedication of our School Nutrition team and the strong support of our community partners,” said Superintendent Dr. Brad Breedlove. “Providing more than 100,000 meals this summer shows how important this program is for families across Pender County.”
The Summer Meals Program offers free meals to children throughout the summer, helping bridge the gap when school cafeterias are closed. Distribution sites are located across Pender County, making meals accessible to families in communities throughout the district.
Current meal distribution locations include:
- Atkinson Town Hall
- C.F. Pope Elementary School
- Malpass Corner Elementary School
- Maple Hill Presbyterian Church
- Rocky Point Elementary School
- South Topsail Elementary School
District officials say the program’s success is made possible through the efforts of School Nutrition staff, volunteers, and community partners who work together to serve thousands of meals each week.
With more than 107,000 meals already distributed, Pender County Schools will continue operating the Summer Meals Program throughout the remainder of the summer, providing critical nutritional support to children and families across the county.
