WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — A major intersection leading into downtown Whiteville will close for about 90 days beginning next week as crews construct a new roundabout.

The closure is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. on Monday, July 14, at the intersection where U.S. 701 Business (South Madison Street) meets South Franklin Street and South Lee Street.

According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, the closure will allow crews to pour the concrete apron and center island, install curbs and gutters, and complete paving and striping for the new roundabout.

Transportation officials said the roundabout is intended to improve traffic flow and safety at the intersection. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed and reopened to traffic in mid-October, replacing the existing traffic signal.

During construction, drivers traveling north on U.S. 701 Business will be detoured by turning right onto South Franklin Street, then left onto East Main Street to reconnect with the highway.

Southbound drivers on U.S. 701 Business will be directed to turn right onto West Main Street, then left onto South Lee Street to return to the route.

To accommodate the detour, the southbound lane of South Franklin Street and the northbound lane of South Lee Street will also be closed during the construction period. Drivers using those streets are encouraged to follow posted detour signs.

The Department of Transportation advises motorists to allow extra travel time, remain alert in the work zone and follow all posted traffic signs.
