Coast Guard Auxiliary to offer boating safety course in Brunswick County

SUPPLY, NC (WWAY) — The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will offer a one-day boating safety course next month that satisfies North Carolina’s boating education requirements.

The “Boating America” course is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 15, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation Assembly Room, 795 Ocean Highway (U.S. 17) in Supply.

Under North Carolina law, anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, must complete an approved boating safety course before operating a vessel with a motor of 10 horsepower or greater on the state’s waterways. Organizers said the course also may help some boaters qualify for insurance discounts.

According to the Coast Guard Auxiliary, the course is taught by certified instructors and covers recreational boating topics including boat maintenance, navigation rules, boating safety, emergency procedures and North Carolina boating laws. The course is designed for operators of powerboats, personal watercraft, sailboats and paddle craft.

The registration fee is $35 per person, or $30 per person for groups of two or more. Payment will be accepted by cash or check at the door.
