SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — Anglers from across the region will compete for cash prizes and bragging rights when the Southport Inshore Challenge returns to Morningstar Marinas Southport on Aug. 14-15.

The annual tournament features a single division focused on red drum, with winners determined by the single heaviest red drum caught by each boat. Organizers say the event is designed for anglers of all experience levels and offers more than $15,000 in cash and prizes.

Fishing will take place on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. There are no fishing boundaries or mandatory checkouts, and participants may use live, dead or artificial bait. Boats can fish with as many anglers as they choose.

Tournament registration will be held Friday, Aug. 14, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Morningstar Marinas Southport. A captains’ meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m., as well as a captains’ party from 5 to 7 p.m.

The weigh-in will take place Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the marina, with an awards dinner and ceremony to follow. Organizers encourage anglers to bring in live red drum, though live weigh-ins are not required.

In addition to the primary leaderboard payouts for the top eight boats, the tournament will feature optional tournaments within the tournament, including categories for the biggest single red drum, two red drum, a “High Roller” division and a “Trash Fish” competition for oyster toadfish or lizardfish.

Additional awards will recognize the top junior, lady and senior anglers, along with raffle prizes and special awards for qualifying catches.

Early registration costs $165 per boat through Aug. 3. After that date, the entry fee increases to $195 per boat. Registration is available online, by phone or in person at participating tackle shops.
