Topsail Middle School teacher named 2026 Corning STEM Educator of the Year

HAMPSTEAD, NC (WWAY) — A Topsail Middle School teacher has been recognized for his commitment to STEM education and hands-on learning in southeastern North Carolina.

Pender County Schools announced that Todd Hewitt, a STEM and robotics teacher at Topsail Middle School, has been named the 2026 Corning STEM Educator of the Year for the Middle School Division.

The annual award, presented by Corning’s Wilmington team, recognizes Cape Fear-area educators who make a lasting impact through innovative instruction in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Corning has honored local STEM educators since 2013.

According to Pender County Schools, Hewitt was selected through a competitive application process that included educators from across southeastern North Carolina.

At Topsail Middle School, Hewitt teaches engineering, robotics, coding and design through project-based learning, encouraging students to think critically, collaborate and develop technical and career-ready skills.

“Mr. Hewitt’s passion for STEM education is evident in everything he does,” said Dominique Bates, director of Career and Technical Education for Pender County Schools. “He challenges students to think beyond the classroom, embrace innovation and believe in their ability to solve complex problems. This honor reflects the positive impact he has on his students, his school and our district. We are incredibly proud of this well-deserved recognition.”

Hewitt was recognized during UNCW’s Soar into STEM Conference on June 11 and again at a Corning celebration held on July 20.

School officials said the recognition reflects Pender County Schools’ commitment to preparing students for college, careers and life through innovative educational opportunities.
