Pigskin Preview: Ashley football looks to new heights under first-year head coach

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Ashley High School is entering the 2026 football season with a new head coach and a renewed focus on establishing the program’s identity.

Adam Purzitza, who previously served as Hoggard High School’s offensive coordinator, has taken over as head coach of the Screaming Eagles following the departure of the program’s previous leader.

Purzitza said the transition to leading an entire program has brought new responsibilities, but he has embraced the challenge.

“I want us to be fast, physical, relentless, hardworking,” Purzitza said. “A lot of people look at us as an easy win… we’re going to change the narrative on that.”

Throughout the offseason, Ashley’s players have focused on building trust, improving their work ethic and adapting to the standards set by the new coaching staff. Senior quarterback Raleigh Sutton said Purzitza has emphasized player development while encouraging communication and accountability.

Sutton credited the coaching staff for helping improve both his individual play and the team’s offensive approach.

Purzitza said his message to the team has centered on controlling what they can during preparation. He told players that if they commit to strength training, conditioning and execution on the field, the results will follow.

The first-year head coach also said he believes the Screaming Eagles have the talent to compete in the Carolina Coast Conference and is looking forward to seeing the team’s offseason work translate into game performance.
