AAA urges families to review insurance before students leave for college

CHARLOTTE, NC (WWAY) — As millions of students prepare to head to college this fall, AAA is urging families to review their insurance policies before move-in day to determine whether students will remain adequately covered while away from home.
More than 19 million students are expected to attend college this fall, according to AAA. The organization says moving to a college campus can affect how auto, homeowners and renters insurance applies, depending on factors including where a student lives and whether they take a vehicle with them.
“Many parents assume their existing policies automatically cover every situation a student may encounter at college, but that’s not always the case,” AAA spokesperson Tiffany Wright said in a news release.
For students taking a vehicle to college, AAA recommends families notify their insurance provider about where the vehicle will be located and confirm their existing coverage remains appropriate. Families may also want to ask whether students qualify for discounts based on academic performance.
Students who leave their vehicles at home could also be eligible for a “student away at school” discount in some cases, particularly if they attend college more than 100 miles from home. Families should also determine what coverage applies if a student drives a roommate’s or friend’s vehicle.
Housing arrangements can also affect insurance coverage.
Some homeowners insurance policies may provide coverage for a student’s belongings while the student lives in a dorm, but limits for property located away from the primary residence can vary. Students living in apartments or other off-campus housing may need renters insurance to protect belongings such as electronics, furniture and clothing.
AAA recommends families check the specific terms and limits of their existing policies rather than assuming a student’s property is fully covered.
The organization also recommends students create a digital inventory of valuable belongings, including photographs and receipts when available. Laptops, tablets, gaming systems and other electronics can be particularly expensive to replace if they are stolen or damaged.
Families with students taking vehicles to campus may also want to review their roadside assistance options and determine what services are available if the student experiences a breakdown or flat tire away from home.
AAA recommends completing an insurance review before students move to campus, including checking auto coverage, homeowners insurance limits and potential renters insurance needs.
Exact coverage, costs and discounts vary by insurer and individual policy.
