NORTH CAROLINA (WWAY) — As millions of students prepare to head to college this fall, AAA is urging parents to review their insurance coverage before move-in day to avoid unexpected costs if something goes wrong.

From stolen laptops and damaged property to vehicle crashes far from home, the transition to college can create insurance coverage gaps that many families don’t discover until they need to file a claim.

“Many parents assume their existing policies automatically cover every situation a student may encounter at college, but that’s not always the case,” said Tiffany Wright, spokesperson for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Before move-in day, families should take a few minutes to understand what’s protected, where limits may apply, and whether adjustments are needed.”

AAA recommends families review several key areas before students leave for campus, including whether a student’s vehicle is covered while away at school, if renters insurance is needed, whether homeowners insurance adequately covers belongings in a dorm room, and what insurance applies if a student borrows someone else’s vehicle.

The organization also encourages parents to notify their insurance provider if a student is taking a car to college, particularly if they’re attending school in another state. Families should also ask about potential savings, including good student discounts and “student away at school” discounts for students who leave a vehicle at home.

For students living off campus, renters insurance may provide broader protection for electronics, furniture, clothing and other personal belongings than a homeowners policy alone. AAA also recommends reviewing roadside assistance options before students leave home, especially for those who will be driving regularly.
