Wounded Warrior Project, Ocean Cure help veterans catch waves in Carolina Beach

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Veterans hit the waves in Carolina Beach on Thursday as the Wounded Warrior Project partnered with local nonprofit Ocean Cure for a surf day along the coast.

The event gave disabled veterans living with both visible and invisible wounds a chance to learn surfing basics, spend time on the water and connect with others.

Participants learned how to properly stand on a surfboard, identify wave patterns and catch waves with help from instructors and volunteers.

Organizers said the event was about more than surfing. It also gave veterans an opportunity to build connections, share camaraderie and enjoy time together outside of a traditional setting.

Ocean Cure has partnered with the Wounded Warrior Project on more than 100 surfing events in Carolina Beach since 2007.
