Man arrested in connection with Jacksonville attack on DoorDash driver
Jacksonville, NC (WWAY) — A man has been arrested in connection with an attack that left a DoorDash driver hospitalized earlier this month in Jacksonville.
Court documents show Stanley Cornelius Shockly is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill in connection with the Aug. 1 attack on Christen Phillips.
Phillips said she was delivering DoorDash orders when an encounter involving a black Range Rover escalated into an alleged road rage incident.
According to Phillips, the incident started around 1 a.m. Aug 1. as she was picking up a DoorDash order from a McDonald’s near Jacksonville. She said she honked at the driver of a black Range Rover that remained stopped at a green left-turn signal.
Rather than continuing on, Phillips said the driver followed her to the delivery location.
After arriving at the customer’s home around 2 a.m., Phillips says the driver followed her to a delivery location and attacked her with a wooden bat.
Phillips said she later regained consciousness and drove herself to a hospital. She was subsequently transferred to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington for additional treatment.
In a recent Facebook post, Phillips said she recently experienced what she described as the worst headaches of her life, along with nausea whenever she sat up or opened her eyes. She said the following day was an improvement.
Phillips said doctors planned to perform a CT scan to examine the bones near her ear and determine whether additional surgery is needed.
She said the current goal is to stop fluid from draining from her ear. According to Phillips, doctors are evaluating whether a lumbar drain that was previously placed has helped close the source of the leak or whether further intervention will be necessary.
Phillips also said she currently has no hearing in her left ear and that doctors are working to determine whether her hearing can be preserved.
She said she remains in the intensive care unit while waiting for more information about the next steps in her treatment.
Phillips thanked people for their continued prayers and support as she recovers.
