Wilmington City Council approves rezoning for third Wawa location

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington City Council has approved a rezoning request that clears the way for a third Wawa location in the city.
Council members voted 5-2 to rezone a 1.76-acre site at 524 S. College Road, across from the University of North Carolina Wilmington, from an Office and Institutional District to a Community Business Conditional District.
The change allows plans to move forward for a new Wawa convenience store and fuel station.
The property includes the former Furniture Fair building, which is expected to be demolished to make way for the new development.
During the Aug. 4 meeting, City Council member J.C. Lyle read the approval statement outlining why the rezoning request was considered favorable.
“The proposed rezoning is compatible with the existing development pattern and will improve access to goods and services in the area,” said Lyle.
The South College Road location would become the third Wawa in Wilmington.
A Wawa at 6800 Carolina Beach Road opened May 28, while the location at 2402 S. 17th St. is scheduled to celebrate its grand opening Thursday, August 13th.
