Surf City to mark major milestone in coastal protection project

SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — The Town of Surf City and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will celebrate a major milestone Monday with the signing of a Project Partnership Agreement for the Surf City Coastal Storm Risk Management Project.

The public ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17, at the Roland Avenue Beach Access, located at 100 Roland Avenue.

The agreement formally outlines the responsibilities of Surf City and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, allowing the long-planned project to move from the planning and design phase toward implementation.

Town officials say the project has been in development since 2010 and is designed to reduce the impacts of coastal storms, protect critical infrastructure and improve the long-term resilience of Surf City’s shoreline.

Plans include beach nourishment and construction of a new dune system intended to help protect the community for years to come.

Federal and state agency representatives, local leaders and project partners are expected to attend the ceremony.

The public is invited to attend. Parking will be available at designated public beach lots, including:

• Lot A25: Kinston Avenue and South Shore Drive
• Lot A21: Roland Avenue and North Topsail Drive
