From vaccines to breakfast: Health tips for the new school year
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — As families prepare for the new school year, pediatric offices and hospitals are seeing an increase in visits from parents making sure their children are up to date on required vaccinations.
Among the vaccines children may need before returning to school are those that protect against tetanus and meningitis.
But pediatrician Dr. Andres Afanador with Novant Health says vaccinations are just one part of getting children ready for a healthy school year.
Afanador recommends that parents set healthy limits on screen time, particularly before bedtime.
“One good rule of thumb is to avoid screens for like 30 minutes to an hour before bedtime,” Afanador said. He said screen use before bed can disrupt sleep and recommended giving children time to wind down, brush their teeth and get ready for bed without screens.
Afanador also recommends making hydration and nutrition part of the back-to-school routine.
He suggests having children drink a full glass of water before leaving for school to help them stay hydrated throughout the day. Parents can also involve their children in packing lunches, giving them an opportunity to learn how to make healthier food choices.
A healthy breakfast is another key part of the morning routine. Afanador recommends meals that include protein and fiber to help children start their school day with the nutrition they need.
