Pender Unity Resource Expo to offer free health screenings and more

BURGAW, NC (WWAY) — The third annual Pender Unity Resource Expo will bring free health screenings, educational guidance and community resources to Pender County next month.
The event, organized by THINK Pender Strong in partnership with the Pender County Health Department and Burgaw Lions Club, is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 4, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Pender County Agricultural Building at 801 S. Walker St. in Burgaw.
The expo is free and open to Pender County residents and surrounding communities.
Organizers say the event is designed to connect residents with health professionals, nonprofits, educators and government agencies offering resources and services.
Free health screenings and safety resources
The Burgaw Lions Club will provide free vision and hearing screenings during the event.
Dr. Eaton from Burgaw Eye Center, along with clinical volunteers from Wilmington Eye in Burgaw, will also offer free eye exams.
Black River Health Services of Burgaw will provide information about primary care and other healthcare services available to local families.
Representatives from the Pender County Health Department will offer information about preventive healthcare, clinical programs and other wellness resources.
Divine Hands CPR will also be on-site providing information about CPR awareness, emergency response and available training programs.
Education and career resources
Grand Canyon University is sponsoring this year’s expo and will have counselors available to provide one-on-one guidance for adults, working professionals and prospective students.
Attendees can learn about undergraduate and graduate degree programs as well as professional certification opportunities.
Community organizations
Other participating organizations are expected to include the Burgaw Lions Club, Pender County Housing Authority, Pender County Veterans Services, North Carolina Community Health Center Association, Illum Insurance, We Rise Up, Safe Haven of Pender, disAbility Resource Center, Lower Cape Fear LifeCare, Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity and Veterans Services of the Carolinas – ABCCM.
Organizers say attendees can also access family assistance programs, food resources, disaster preparedness information and community giveaways.
Admission to the event is free.
