Wilmington police identify man shot by officers on Red Cross Street

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A 35-year-old Wilmington man has been charged after an officer-involved shooting Friday night in downtown Wilmington, according to the Wilmington Police Department.

Police identified the man as Rodney Wilson, who is currently in stable condition at a hospital while receiving treatment.

The incident happened around 7:26 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, in the 700 block of Red Cross Street.

According to Wilmington police, officers working with deputies from the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of an armed individual who was reportedly acting aggressively and had pointed a firearm at another person.

Officers located a person matching the description near 7th and Red Cross streets.

Police said the armed individual fired shots at law enforcement officers. In response to what officers described as an imminent threat, multiple officers fired their weapons.

Wilson was transported to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.

He has been charged with possession of a firearm by a felon. Wilmington police said additional charges are pending.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.

The officers involved in the shooting were placed on paid administrative leave, in accordance with standard department policy.

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information is expected to be released as it becomes available.
