Former longtime UNCW Athletics administrator Pat Howey dies
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The UNC Wilmington Athletics Department is mourning the death of longtime administrator Pat Howey, who retired in 2013 after 30 years of service to the university.
Howey held several leadership positions during her time with UNCW Athletics, including senior women’s administrator, assistant athletic director, associate athletic director, senior associate athletic director, interim athletic director and deputy athletic director.
She also served as a sports supervisor for numerous UNCW programs, including women’s basketball, men’s and women’s track and field, men’s and women’s cross country, volleyball, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, softball and baseball.
Her responsibilities also included oversight of facilities, sports medicine, strength and conditioning, academics and compliance.
Howey received the UNCW Employee Service Award in 2001 and served on numerous tournament committees throughout her career. She also worked as a tournament director on multiple occasions.
She played a key role in bringing the 1994 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship to Wilmington. When the championship returned to the Country Club of Landfall in 2010, Howey served as co-director of the event.
Howey was appointed interim athletic director by former UNCW Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo from April through July 2007. She also briefly served as interim athletic director in the fall of 2010.
She was a former member of the National Association of Collegiate Women’s Athletic Administrators and graduated from the organization’s Institute for Athletics Executives in 2005.
Howey was nominated for the YWCA’s Women of Achievement Award in 2004 and served on UNCW’s Task Force on Education and Training Initiatives for Campus Violence Prevention in 2004.
UNCW Athletics described Howey’s career as 30 years of exemplary service to the department.
The university did not provide additional details about her death.
