East Columbus tops Heide Trask 12-6 in defensive battle

ROCKY POINT, N.C. (WWAY) — East Columbus earned a 12-6 road win over Heide Trask on Thursday night in a defensive matchup between two teams led by new head coaches.

The Titans were dealt an early blow when ECU commit and offensive lineman Gio Driggers was injured and ruled out for the rest of the game.

Neither team found the end zone in the first half, with East Columbus’ Patron Dixon helping set the tone defensively with a big sack.

The Gators broke the scoreless tie in the third quarter after Demetrius Dexter intercepted a deep pass from Heide Trask quarterback Gabe Van Vliet. The turnover set up Ryan Cobb, who broke through the defense and powered his way into the end zone to give East Columbus a 6-0 lead.

Heide Trask later answered with a touchdown, but the Gators added enough to come away with the 12-6 win. East Columbus improves to 2-0, while Heide Trask falls to 0-2.
