Topsail defeats New Hanover 24-21, leaving Wildcats’ playoff hopes uncertain
HAMPSTEAD, NC (WWAY) — The Topsail Pirates closed out the regular season with a 24-21 win over New Hanover on Friday night, leaving the Wildcats’ playoff hopes uncertain. New Hanover entered the matchup with a potential playoff spot on the line, while Topsail looked to build momentum after defeating West Brunswick the previous week.
The Wildcats got their rushing attack going early, with junior running back Bryson Ellison finding the end zone. Topsail responded behind freshman standout Kyle Albert, who took a screen pass down the sideline for a touchdown to give the Pirates a 14-7 lead.
The Pirates looked to extend their advantage, but quarterback Tyler Vickers had a pass deflected and intercepted by New Hanover senior Jayden Holloway. However, turnovers and struggles maintaining possession continued to hurt the Wildcats, preventing them from taking control of the game.
Albert found the end zone again for Topsail, helping the Pirates maintain their lead. New Hanover mounted a second-half comeback, but the Wildcats ultimately fell short as Topsail secured the 24-21 victory.
The loss leaves New Hanover on the playoff bubble as teams await the release of the NCHSAA state playoff brackets Saturday, Oct. 31. The first round of the playoffs is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 6.
