‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ wardrobe donation to support Cape Fear youth athletes

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — More than 200 pieces of athletic apparel, footwear and sports gear from the Wilmington production of The Summer I Turned Pretty movie are being donated to support youth athletes in the Cape Fear region.

The Game Changers Foundation said the items came from the production’s costume department and will first be made available to qualifying local athletes before the remaining collection is placed in an online fundraiser.

From Aug. 31 through Sept. 8, athletes and families can preview the donated items and apply for financial assistance through the foundation. Those who qualify will be contacted to identify available gear that meets their needs. Approved items will be provided at no cost and removed from the auction.

The remaining wardrobe and sports gear will be included in an online auction running from Sept. 10 through Sept. 20.

According to the foundation, proceeds will support financial assistance for youth athletes who need help accessing physical therapy, sports performance training, equipment and other athletic resources.

The Game Changers Foundation launched in Wilmington in 2023 and focuses on middle and high school athletes whose families may have difficulty affording training, care or equipment.

The foundation said local coaches, athletic directors and youth sports organizations are also being encouraged to share the opportunity with families who may qualify for assistance.
