UNCW women’s soccer unbeaten ahead of in-state matchup with East Carolina
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) — The UNCW women’s soccer team is off to an unbeaten start this season, and the Seahawks are preparing for a regional test Thursday night against East Carolina.
UNCW entered Wednesday’s practice with a 3-0-2 record through its first five games, building on a 2025 season that saw the Seahawks win the CAA South Division championship.
The Seahawks were put to work Wednesday despite temperatures hovering around 90 degrees.
“just always showing up no matter what.. I mean its 90 degrees out today and we are all here were all working.,” junior midfielder Abby Pierson said.
Wednesday also marked head coach Chris Neal’s birthday, giving him another reason to enjoy practice with a team he says has become one of his favorites during his coaching career.
“To be out here on my birthday with this group Its actually my 32nd year on a collegiate soccer bench this is one of my favorite groups of all time and I just feel very lucky to be out here,” Neal said.
Neal shares the Seahawks have plenty of experience and depth, along with playmakers on both ends of the field.
“There’s a lot to like about this team we have a lot of returners, a lot of depth and a lot of athleticism we really do have a lot of weapons both on the defending end and on the attacking end. all of our defenders are tough as nails and will throw in tackles to get fans excited and all of our attackers are creative and can score goals ,” Neal said.
UNCW will now put that unbeaten record on the line against a familiar in-state opponent when East Carolina visits Wilmington for a 7 p.m. kickoff Thursday. Although the Seahawks and Pirates do not play in the same conference, Neal said the matchup has the feel of an in-state rivalry.
“Always a great game with East Carolina. l think this matchup brings out the best in both teams and its going to be very competitive. it will just be a matter of which team takes their chances and which team finishes the opportunities presented to themselves,” Neal said.
For Pierson, UNCW’s early success goes beyond the unbeaten record. She said the Seahawks’ chemistry has played a major role in their start.
“We have such a great group and such a great culture. these girls are all amazing and we are truly such a family and every time we step on that field we play together and that’s one of the major keys to our success this season so far,” Pierson said.
After hosting East Carolina on Thursday, UNCW will remain at home to face High Point at 1 p.m. Sunday as part of its Morgan’s Message game.
