Paws Place clears permitting hurdle for new storm-ready shelter
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Paws Place says construction can begin on its planned Sanctuary Shelter after the organization received a building permit for the next phase of the project.
The nonprofit is working to build the storm-ready shelter on its 17-acre property in Brunswick County.
According to an update from Paws Place, the first phase of the project is now complete. That work included installing an operational fire hydrant and widening an access road to meet fire department requirements.
The organization said it also revised its construction documents in response to county feedback before receiving the building permit for Phase 2, which includes construction of the shelter itself.
Paws Place said the project has taken longer than initially anticipated because of permitting delays, engineering revisions and road requirements.
The organization has also increased the project’s fundraising goal from $300,000 to $315,000. Paws Place attributed the increase to changes in the project’s scope, county requirements, revisions to building and engineering plans and higher material costs since the project began about a year and a half ago.
According to Paws Place, about $290,000 has been raised toward the updated goal, leaving approximately $25,000 remaining.
The organization said it plans to provide updates as construction progresses and eventually hold an open house once the shelter is far enough along for visitors to tour.
