Union Elementary School to celebrate 75 years in Brunswick County

BOLIVIA, NC (WWAY) — Generations of students, educators and families will come together this weekend to celebrate 75 years of Union Elementary School in Brunswick County.

The school will hold its 75th anniversary celebration from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19. Former students, staff members, families and other community members are invited to attend.

Union opened during the 1951-52 school year and originally served Black students in Brunswick County under the segregated public school system of the time.

The school graduated its final high school class in 1969. As Brunswick County Schools moved toward integration, the building transitioned to Union Primary School in 1970.

It later became Union Elementary School during the 1992-93 school year.

“For 75 years, Union has been more than a school. It has been a place where generations of families have learned, grown and built lasting memories,” Principal Sam Jennings said. “This celebration gives our community a chance to honor that history while continuing to support the future of Union Elementary.”

Saturday’s anniversary celebration will recognize former students, educators and community members who have contributed to the school’s history while bringing them together with current members of the Union Elementary community.

The school is also working to preserve that history through a brick walkway fundraiser and a distinguished alumni campaign.

Bricks are available for $50 and will become part of a permanent walkway at the school. The distinguished alumni campaign will recognize former students who have contributed to the Union community.
