Amazon to open Cape Fear region’s first robotics fulfillment center in October

Wilmington, NC (WWAY) — Amazon is preparing to open its first robotics fulfillment center in southeastern North Carolina, bringing fulfillment and delivery operations to the Cape Fear region.

The company will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony Oct. 5 at its Amazon Robotics Sortable Fulfillment Center at 101 Vitamin Drive in Wilmington.

According to Amazon, the fulfillment center and an adjacent delivery station represent the company’s first direct-to-consumer operations in the area. The company says the two facilities will employ more than 1,100 full-time workers.

The fulfillment center uses robotics alongside employees to sort and prepare customer orders for shipment.

North Carolina Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley is expected to attend the ribbon cutting. Lilley has served as the state’s commerce secretary since January 2025.

Other scheduled attendees include Amazon Vice President of Economic Development Holly Sullivan, state Sen. Michael Lee, Pender County Commission Chair Randy Burton and Wilmington Business Development CEO Scott Satterfield. Lee currently serves as the North Carolina Senate majority leader and represents District 7 in New Hanover County.

The ribbon cutting is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
