Elevated bacteria levels prompt swimming advisory in Southport

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — State officials have issued a swimming advisory for a sound-side site in Southport after water samples showed elevated bacteria levels.
The advisory applies to the public kayak launch in Cottage Creek at the end of West West Street.
Samples collected Oct. 6 and Oct. 7 showed enterococci bacteria levels above the state and federal action level of 104 enterococci per 100 milliliters for a Tier 2 recreational site.
Enterococci bacteria are found in the intestines of warm-blooded animals. While the bacteria themselves do not necessarily cause illness, state officials say elevated levels can indicate the possible presence of other disease-causing organisms.
People who swim or play in water with bacteria levels above the action level may face a higher risk of gastrointestinal illness or skin infections.
The advisory applies only to waters within 200 feet of the posted sign. It is not a beach closing and does not apply to the entire Southport area.
State officials say they will continue testing the site and will remove the advisory once bacteria levels fall below state and federal standards.
