Two Navy veterans to receive service dogs aboard Battleship North Carolina

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Two Navy veterans will receive specially trained service dogs during a ceremony aboard the Battleship North Carolina in Wilmington next week.
Canines for Service, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting veterans through service dog partnerships, will host the ceremony Friday, Oct. 23, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event will recognize Patrick Walker of Hollandale, Minnesota, and Anne Leanos of Wilmington as they are officially partnered with their service dogs.
The ceremony is being held in partnership with the Battleship North Carolina, providing a historic setting to recognize the veterans and their new canine companions.
According to Canines for Service, the partnerships are intended to provide life-changing support to veterans while honoring their military service.
“The sea teaches us that every ship needs an anchor and every sailor needs a steadfast companion. In October, aboard a vessel that symbolizes service and sacrifice, two Navy Veterans will receive more than service dogs – they will receive life-changing partners for their journeys ahead. Together, they embody our mission to inspire Veterans through life-changing canine partnerships,” said Ashlee Luther, veteran services coordinator.
The Battleship North Carolina served in the Pacific Theater during World War II, participating in every major naval offensive and earning 15 battle stars.
Organizers say the ship’s military history makes it a fitting location for the ceremony, which highlights the shared commitment of Canines for Service and the Battleship North Carolina to recognizing and supporting veterans.
The event will take place Friday, Oct. 23, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. aboard the Battleship North Carolina, located at 1 Battleship Road in Wilmington.
Representatives from Canines for Service and the Battleship North Carolina, along with supporters and media, are expected to attend.
