The 5th Quarter October 16th, 2026
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) — Week 9 of the high school football season brought another round of conference matchups and crosstown rivalries across the Cape Fear region Friday night.
WWAY Sports Director Kayla Precht and Ryan Wiener returned for another edition of The 5th Quarter, highlighting the action as teams continued their push through the regular season.
One of the night’s biggest matchups featured the Hoggard Vikings traveling across Wilmington to face the Laney Buccaneers. It was a special night in Buc Town as Laney celebrated 50 years of Buccaneer tradition during its homecoming festivities. However, Hoggard quarterback Matthew Boring and the Vikings had other plans.
Elsewhere in Wilmington, the Ashley Screaming Eagles hosted the New Hanover Wildcats in another big Carolina Coast Conference matchup. With the regular season winding down, teams across the region are battling for conference positioning and looking to build momentum heading into the final weeks.
