WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Cape Fear River Watch is hosting two Halloween-themed outdoor events this weekend, offering opportunities to explore local waterways while learning about environmental issues affecting the Cape Fear region.

The organization will hold its final free Burnt Mill Creek ecotour of the month on Friday, Oct. 30, from 8 to 9 a.m.

The Halloween-themed walking tour, called an “eeekotour,” will focus on environmental threats affecting the Burnt Mill Creek watershed and ways residents can help address them.

Participants will also have opportunities to observe local wildlife, including birds, insects, crabs, fish, amphibians and reptiles.

The tour is open to all ages and will take place along an unpaved service road that may include areas of tall vegetation. Organizers recommend bringing water, sun protection and comfortable walking shoes. Costumes are encouraged.

The group will meet at 2000 Shirley Road in Wilmington, with parking available along the service road. The event is free, but registration is required to reserve binoculars.

On Saturday, Oct. 31, Cape Fear River Watch will host a Halloween-themed guided kayak tour at Greenfield Lake from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m.

The “Ghoulden Hour Paddle” will take participants through the lake’s cypress trees, where they may see fish, reptiles and roosting birds.

The tour will also focus on environmental threats affecting Greenfield Lake and how protecting its water quality contributes to the health of the Cape Fear River Basin.

The family-friendly event costs $15 for a single kayak or $20 for a tandem kayak. Binoculars and one free refreshment are included with registration, and costumes are encouraged.

Participants are asked to arrive at the Greenfield Lake Boathouse, located at 1739 Burnett Blvd., no later than 5 p.m. before departing at 5:15 p.m.

The boathouse will also operate during its regular hours on Halloween, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last boat departing at 4 p.m. Customers who paddle in costume during regular hours will receive a free refreshment while supplies last.
