Wrightsville Beach police chief to retire in March 2027

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Wrightsville Beach Police Chief Jason Bishop will retire March 1, 2027, after more than 28 years with the department.
Bishop joined the Wrightsville Beach Police Department in 1998 and served as a sergeant and captain before becoming interim police chief in July 2024. He was appointed chief in January 2025.
During his career, Bishop received several honors, including the department’s Officer of the Year award in 2007 and 2020, the New Hanover County District Attorney’s Service Above Self Award in 2015, and the department’s Medal of Valor and Lifesaving Award that same year.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and criminology from the University of Mount Olive.
The town plans to begin recruiting Bishop’s successor in November 2026. Officials said the search will focus on finding a leader with strong communication skills and experience in public safety, employee development and community relations.
“The police chief serves as a vital member of the Town’s leadership team, working closely with the Board of Aldermen, Town Manager, and department heads to maintain the high standards of public safety that Wrightsville Beach residents and visitors expect,” Town Manager Haynes Brigman said.
Bishop said he remains committed to serving the town and supporting the department through the remainder of his tenure.
