UNCW to conduct full-volume emergency siren test Thursday

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The University of North Carolina Wilmington will conduct a full-volume test of its emergency alert system Thursday, Nov. 5, including the university’s outdoor warning sirens.
The test is scheduled for noon and is part of the university’s routine efforts to maintain its emergency notification system and familiarize the campus community with emergency procedures.
University officials emphasize that this is only a test, and no action is required from students, employees or the surrounding community.
The UNCW Police Department conducts routine testing with support from Environmental Health and Safety and University Relations.
What will be tested?
The UNCW Alert emergency notification system uses several communication tools to notify students, faculty and staff about potential emergencies.
Those tools include:
- Outdoor warning sirens
- Campus emails
- UNCW Alert text messages and phone calls
- Pop-up notifications on university-owned computers
- UNCW Alert SafeZone app
- UNCW Mobile app
The SafeZone app allows students and employees to access campus resources, communicate directly with police dispatch and submit anonymous tips.
The UNCW Mobile app provides access to university information and emergency notifications for students, employees, parents, families and community members.
During an actual emergency, the university may use some or all of these notification methods, depending on the circumstances.
How to receive emergency alerts
UNCW says students, faculty and staff are automatically registered to receive emergency text messages, phone calls and campus emails.
Anyone who needs to verify, update or remove a phone number from the notification system can contact the UNCW Police Department.
University officials also encourage the campus community to rely on official UNCW communications during emergencies.
Additional emergency information is available through the university’s website, UNCW Alert news page and official social media accounts.
The full-volume test will take place at noon Thursday, Nov. 5. No action is necessary.
