WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Families in Wilmington will have an opportunity to help their children develop important water safety skills during a free program at the Nir Family YMCA this week.

The YMCA will host its Safety Around Water program Friday, Nov. 6, from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

The program is open to children ages 3 to 14 and focuses on teaching essential water safety skills, building confidence in the water and introducing basic swimming techniques.

Certified YMCA instructors will lead participants through activities designed to help children recognize potential dangers and respond safely in aquatic environments.

Teaching water safety in a coastal community

YMCA officials say learning water safety skills at an early age is especially important for families living near beaches, pools and other waterways.

“Living in coastal North Carolina means our children are constantly around beaches, pools, and natural waterways,” said Lindsey Hays, aquatics director for the Nir Family YMCA. “Teaching water safety is a critical, life-saving necessity. This program equips kids with the skills they need to stay safe, while giving parents peace of mind.”

The program aims to give children practical experience navigating pools safely while developing skills that can help reduce the risk of drowning.

Free program made possible by community donations

The Safety Around Water program is completely free for participating families.

According to the YMCA, funding comes from community donations to its Annual Campaign, which supports programs designed to make essential services accessible regardless of a family’s financial situation.

YMCA officials say the donations help eliminate financial barriers that might otherwise prevent children from receiving water safety education.

How to register

The free program will take place Friday, Nov. 6, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Nir Family YMCA in Wilmington.

Registration is open to children ages 3 to 14, but space is limited.

Families are encouraged to register early to secure a spot.

Additional information about registration and opportunities to support the program is available through the YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina.
