“A car is a weapon. You gotta watch where you’re going,”: Victim of hit and run accident says he wants justice

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Police are looking for a suspect who they say struck a cyclist while riding down Dawson street in Wilmington.

The victim who asked to remain nameless said he wants justice and for people to be more careful while driving.

He said he was riding his bike from the grocery store, and when he came to the stop sign at Dawson and 7th street in Wilmington, the victim proceeded to cross the street.

He said the intersection appeared to be clear.

“Next thing you know, I see a woman crossing 7th and I see this woman flying down the street..coming up to the stop sign, and definitely was speeding as well,” The Victim said. “She blows the stop sign…didn’t stop anywhere near the stop sign or the crosswalk, and then she comes to a quick stop right before the curb.”

The victim said because the driver stopped, he kept going.

“And then she hits the gas, and just literally drives right into me. I couldn’t even believe it as it was happening. I’m like wow,” The Victim said.

Police said it happened Sunday, June 14th around 5 p.m.

The victim said the suspect who was driving a medium-sized grey or silver SUV got to check on him.

“So I look down. My whole upper arm is gnarred up, bleeding, my elbow, my lower arm was all messed up bleeding. My foot feels like its almost broken, my shin is so gnarred up,” The Victim said.

The victim said as he was calling police, the driver got back in the SUV and drove off.

The victim said he is thankful he did not have to go to the hospital, but now he will be more mindful while riding his bike.

“So now, I got this paranoid sense where I don’t trust any car. I’m not going to ever go in front of a car again,” The Victim said.

The Wilmington Police Department is offering up to $500 to anyone who can provide information to call (910) 343-3609.
