Crash involving cars, tractor trailer shuts down US 17 in Hampstead

HAMPSTEAD, NC (WWAY) — Highway Patrol says one person was seriously injured in a four-car crash that shut down all lanes of US 17 in Pender County.

Highway Patrol Trooper Hendrickson says it happened on U.S. Highway 17 near Hughes Road and Deerfield Drive in Hampstead. He says the call about the crash came in around 1:15 p.m.

Hendrickson says one driver had serious injuries and the other three had minor injuries. He says three of the drivers were transported by EMS.

Hendrickson says one car pulled out from a driveway in front of another car that was traveling northbound on Highway 17. He says the first car pushed the second car into oncoming traffic, causing the multi-car crash.

Highway Patrol says a tractor trailer pulled up onto the curb to avoid the crash.

Hendrickson says the Pender County Sheriff’s Office assisted Highway Patrol on the scene.

No word on the current condition of the drivers.
