Rocky Point man killed in crash near Laney High School


NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — One man died in an early morning crash in New Hanover County.

It happened around 6:30 a.m. on N. College Road near Laney High School.

Sgt. M.W. King of the NC Highway Patrol says Maximino Lopez, 53, of Rocky Point was driving a Dodge Neon and heading south on N. College Road, when Hunter Jolley, 20, of Mooresboro, crossed the center line and hit him head on.

Lopez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jolley was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and driving left of center. Sgt. King says there were no signs of impairment.

Jolley was not taken to the hospital.

Trooper M.A. Minshew is still investigating the crash.
