Active gang members combat violence with beer
WILMINGTON (WWAY) — TRU Colors is a new brewery in the works in our area, and it is unlike any other.
“Our social mission is to decrease gang violence and unify across the country,” said Tru Colors marketing manager Cory Wrisborne.
TRU Colors Brewing Company is a brewery with a mission. And it’s run by active gang members.
“What we found is that the biggest thing that was missing between these rival gangs was communication. So with opportunity and communication, we all found that we wanted the same things in life. We wanted the same things for our children,” said Wrisborne.
The idea for TRU Colors Brewing Company was born in June 2017 when 11 gang leaders from the Bloods, Crips, and Growth & Development (a gang once known as Gangster Disciples), came together with a goal to end gang violence.
Wrisborne says besides preventing gang violence, the company wants to change public perspective about what it means to be a gang member.
“People get the wrong idea when they hear active gang members, but that’s a big part of the mission of our company. We want to drive a new understanding of opportunity in gang culture. We want to drive new perspectives of who we are and to help the world to understand who we are as a gang member,” said Wrisborne.
“We want to spread our impact out throughout the world. So we don’t want this to only impact Wilmington. We are aspiring to increase our influence throughout the world,” he said.
TRU Colors will be starting construction in their new space within the next six or eight weeks, and hope to have their beer on shelves in early 2019.
