Adult protective services reports rising in New Hanover
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (StarNews) — The number of adult protective services reports in New Hanover County grew by 15.5 percent in one year, according to the county Department of Social Services.
During the same time period, the number of APS reports screened in for evaluation increased by 17.6 percent, or more than 100. A report is accepted for evaluation if it meets certain criteria such as the individual is 18 years or older, is incapacitated by a disability, is the victim of abuse, neglect or exploitation, and is unable to act on his or her own behalf.
During the 2014-15 fiscal year, New Hanover DSS received 1,021 APS reports and screened in 581 for evaluation. In the 2015-16 fiscal year, which ended June 30, the department received 1,179 APS reports and screened in 683.
