Affording child care can be difficult for many families

These days, having two parents who work is not unusual. For these families, and single parent households, child care a necessity. But affording that care can be difficult.

Single mom, Melissa Brooks, knows all too well how expensive child care can be. “It’s almost better just to stay home and take care of them, rather than try to find a day care that’s a reasonable price.”

To attend a licensed, five-star state rated childcare center it can cost almost 700 dollars per child, but even the average day care facilities can cost hundreds of dollars; a price some parents just can afford to pay.

Brooks has been out of work for a few weeks, but she hopes to have a job soon. When that happens, her mother will watch the boys. “My mom will be the only one helping me while I’m at work, so I’m going to have to work around her work schedule in order for me to be able to work,” she said.

Pediatrician Dr. David Hill encounters many families unable to afford day care. Friends and family can be a big help, but Dr. Hill advised making sure they are healthy enough to handle the work, be sure their homes are kid-friendly, and free of choking or electrical hazards. He also recommends asking your employer for help.

“Employers are becoming more and more flexible in terms of hours. You might be able to job share with somebody you might be able to find somebody who works an opposite shift as you so they can watch your child while you watch theirs,” Dr. Hill said.

When deciding whether to go back to work, or stay home with the kids – do the math. Dr. Hill points out that sometimes the cost of child care can be alarmingly close to your take-home pay – so weigh all your options.

There is some government assistance out there. Check out the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services website to see if you qualify.
