NCDOT says the maintenance will extend the bridge’s life by 25-50 years.
After months of being closed, when will the Oak Island bridge reopen?
OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — The G.V. Barbee Bridge to Oak Island closed in October for repairs and crews have been hard at work to keep things on schedule.
NCDOT Engineer Kevin Bowen says they are more than halfway complete with the new concrete riding surface and expansion joints will be replaced once the work is finished. Preparation to anchor the 2-bar metal railing on the concrete barrier for bicycle and pedestrian protection is underway. The repair work on the substructure underneath the bridge continues.
Crews will pave East Oak Island Drive after the bridge has been reopened to the public.
Bowen says the rumor of the bridge opening on March 15 to one lane to traffic is not true. However, they are on schedule to open on April 15.
