Air Force JROTC cadets remember fallen soldiers

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Saturday, 80 Laney High School Air Force ROTC cadets put over 1,000 American flags on graves of veterans in Oakdale Cemetery. This is an 8-year Veteran’s Day tradition.

Colonel Harrison Smith says this is a chance to honor all veterans that have died in all of the wars in the United States.

Smith says the AFROTC is a citizenship program to build better citizens.

This community service project allows each kid to reflect on the sacrifices that were made by these veterans.

“It’s not just going around and placing a flag on the grave,” said Smith. “We want to have an honorable ceremony to actually think about the veteran and imagine what that veteran might have done for America.”

Woodmen Life Insurance donated the American flags.

A company spokesperson says they focus on putting resources back into the community.

This year 100 more flags were added.
