Alcohol Law Enforcement assisting in fatal Surf City crash

SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — Alcohol Law Enforcement is assisting Surf City Police in a deadly crash during a winter storm last week.

Surf City Police responded to a call of a submerged vehicle in a canal at the end of Broadway Street just before 2 a.m. Thursday morning. Police Chief Ron Shanahan said they found Dax Christopher Baker, 20, dead inside. He said first responders could see the roof of the car sticking out of the water.

Detectives believe the bad weather played a factor in the crash.

Chief Shanahan said alcohol law enforcement is now assisting them in the investigation. He also said they are waiting for autopsy results.
