ALDI opens first store in Wilmington

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Hundreds of people packed Wilmington’s first ALDI on Thursday.

With a full parking lot, drivers were forced to park along the street. Lines at the cash register backed up into the aisles.

“Every community needs an ALDI,” said Jamie Shunick, director of operations. “The Wilmington area is an area we’ve been wanting to get to for a while now. We’re so happy to be here. Everybody that we talked to today is happy to have us.”

To mark the grocery store’s grand opening, employees handed out free bags, cups of juice and free samples.

The first 100 shoppers received ALDI gift cards loaded with various amounts.

The new store is located at 7954 Market Street.

Two new locations, one in Leland and one in Monkey Junction, are set to open later this year.
