‘American Heroes Day’ to be held on NC Outer Banks

RODANTHE, N.C. — American heroes will be remembered at the Chicamocimico Life-Saving Station Museum Complex on Hatteras Island.

The fourth annual “American Heroes Day” will be held Thursday in Rodanthe. Chicamocimico was built on the Outer Banks in 1874 and was part of the U.S. Life-Saving Service, which became the U.S. Coast Guard.

The beach apparatus drill is usually the most popular event. The historic reenactment of a rescue method used by the U.S. Life-Saving Service involves a large two-wheeled cart filled with life-saving equipment; the firing a projectile with a black-powder cannon to get lines to a stricken ship; and then sending out equipment to save the lives of those on board.
