Anniversary of the U.S. entering World War I
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) —Today marks the 100th anniversary of the United States joining World War I.
The U.S. joined the allied effort in 1917, a major turning point in the war.
According to historian, Wilbur Jones, Wilmington played a large role in the war by catching some of the first Germans in World War I.
Many people who served from Wilmington in that war, left their mark and have been honored with a monument.
“It has the names of 37 New Hanover county men who lost their lives in service to our country in world war one, almost all of them on the battlefields in Europe,” Jones said.
Jones says another man who fought for the U.S. in World War I was his own father
