Annual beach monitoring survey begins August 10 on Oak Island

OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — The annual Beach Monitoring Survey on Oak Island is set to begin Monday, August 10, as part of the town’s ongoing Beach Management Plan.

Surveying contractor Gahagan & Bryant Associates (GBA) will conduct the work, which will include both land and water operations.

Residents and visitors may see a truck displaying the GBA logo and GPS equipment moving through beach areas during the survey. A small, clearly marked boat will also be used near the shoreline to collect hydrographic measurements.

Officials said the survey boat may come close to shore during the process. Those fishing or swimming near the boat are asked to temporarily move away or reel in fishing lines until the boat has passed.

The town said the activity is part of routine monitoring efforts and is not a cause for concern.

The survey is expected to take approximately seven to 10 days, weather permitting.
