Another push to stop gerrymandering in North Carolina
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — There’s another push to change North Carolina’s redistricting laws.
Right now, there are very few competitive districts because Republicans and Democrats can draw such specific lines.
Wednesday night, the bi-partisan North Carolina Coalition for Lobbying and Government Reform talked in Wilmington at the Pearsall Presbyterian Church about copying Iowa’s law that draws lines based on population not politics.
Jane Pinsky, a coalition member, said the way North Carolina does it now creates lazy politicians and disenchanted voters.
“So, that makes people who don’t want to compromise, aren’t interested in pragmatic solutions and aren’t listening to voters. And, voters figure that out and they choose not to vote. And, if voters don’t vote, democracy doesn’t work,” Pinsky said.
Pinsky said she hopes lawmakers will vote on the issue again in the next legislative session. But, she added that it’s ultimately up to voters to push legislators to do so.
