AP: Burr wins GOP Senate nomination

RALEIGH, NC (AP) – North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr has defeated three Republican primary opponents and now awaits a Democratic challenger.

Unofficial results from Tuesday’s election showed the GOP lawmaker with 80 percent of the vote with 22 percent precincts reporting. That was enough to beat Eddie Burks of Asheboro, Brad Jones of Lake Toxaway and Larry Linney of Charlotte. Each of them had less than 10 percent of the vote.

Six Democrats are competing to challenge Burr in the November election. Early results were too close to call, with Secretary of State Elaine Marshall leading with 39 percent of the vote and former state Sen. Cal Cunningham holding 27 percent.

Burr is seeking a second term in the Senate. He previously spent a decade in the House.
